Artificial intelligence can lead to workplace harassment 

Many businesses are adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to improve workplace efficiency. AI may be used to automate tasks, improve management, streamline customer service, predict challenges, and analyze data. 

While AI can be used for many good reasons, people may also abuse AI services. Employees may use AI tools at their workplace to harass co-workers, such as creating “deepfakes” or revenge porn. Here is what you should know:

What are deepfakes and revenge porn?

Deepfakes are artificially created or altered images or videos that look real. People can make deepfakes do just about anything, such as swapping people’s faces, making people look older — or making people appear in their favorite movies. These deepfakes do not represent reality but are intentionally deceptive images or videos. 

For many people, creating deepfakes is a fun, harmless activity. However, others may use deepfakes to harm people near them, such as at their workplace. For example, an employee may use AI tools to make a fake video of their co-worker in a sexually explicit scene – this is called revenge porn. 

Revenge porn is a sexually explicit video or image of a person posted online without their consent, which can jeopardize an employee’s job. Management may punish an employee because a public, sexually explicit video of them poorly represents the image of the company. It can be hard for employees to protect their rights after a deepfake or revenge porn is posted online. 

Employees who have had their image or likeness used in a deepfake or revenge porn are victims of sexual harassment. Victims of deepfakes or revenge porn may need to reach out for legal guidance to address sexual harassment at their workplace.
